Statement 5: We have the subjugation of women and the idea that they are inferior to men. (EVERYWHERE!)

In Response: The term “subjugate” refers to a conquering nature. I don’t recall ever reading in the Bible that God created woman to be “conquered”, nor that God considers women “inferior”. Everything I read in the Bible tells me that God considers all humans as his children. Note that in heaven, there is no male or female, nor giving in marriage (see Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25; Luke 20:35; Galatians 3:28). Let’s look at some other Scriptures regarding how God considers man and woman…

The Holy Bible, New International Version,

1st Corinthians 11:3, 7-9, 11-12

3Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.

Acts 2:17-18

17“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

Acts 5:14

14Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.*

*This is especially significant in light of John 3:16; 10:28; Matthew 18:14; and Luke 19:10

Acts 8:12

12But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Acts 9:1-2

1Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

Acts 13:50

50But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city.

Acts 16:13-14

13On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.

Acts 17:12

12Many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

Acts 22:4

4I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison.

Romans 16:12

12Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord.

Philippians 4:3

3Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

1st Timothy 5:1b-2

Treat younger men as brothers, 2older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.*

* editor’s note: treat women with purity!

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church—for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Ephesians 5:22-33

It is plain to see from the Scripture examples what God’s Word has to say about the relationship between men and women. God values neither one above the other; He desires each and every one of us, regardless of gender. God created us to be with him. As God does not judge by appearance (see 1st Samuel 16:7; Galatians 2:6), neither does he care about our gender with regards to our worship of Him. However, do not be deceived; God considers sacred the distinction of the genders, as shown in His creative design of man and woman, who, though both in the image of God, are also uniquely and differently designed (cf. Gen 1:27). Any attempt to erase that distinction is labeled an “abomination”.
