Knowledge Over Wisdom

We are not perishing from a lack of knowledge,
but from a lack of wisdom.

“Your money is corrupt and your fine clothes stink. Your greedy luxuries are a cancer in your gut, destroying your life from within. You thought you were piling up wealth. What you’ve piled up is judgment.”  James 5:2-3 (MSG)

Some people claim that our technological advancements have done more harm than good. But in all truth, it is not the advancements that have been made, but rather the ways we have chosen to employ those advances that are at the heart of the matter. For it is the heart of man that chooses to use and/or abuse that which is at his disposal, be it inanimate objects, people, or schools of thought. However, I do agree that each generation throughout recorded history, has had a class of people who have become complacent and spoiled with the riches of their respective ages.

While I cannot say with certainty that there are more people today (per capita) with the ability to enjoy the riches of our world, I can plainly see that those who are able to indulge in said riches, have become quite comfortable and complacent in their lifestyle — and that includes me.

Additionally, one does not need a prophet or seer to know that if a sudden loss of our modern technology were to occur, many people would not have the wits nor the skills to survive (and again, that includes me). Only those who are living independent of today’s modern technology will have any hope of real survival. While there have been a plethora of books, TV shows and movies covering such scenarios, the most realistic of the bunch do not include a happy ending.

Up until the 20th century, most people have had the skills and the knowledge needed to thrive and survive on their own. People knew how to make candles and soap and dig a well, etc. But those skills are no longer common place in the 21st century. Even with our modern technology, many people are unable to eke out a living, even though they are living in the midst of cities abundant with technological resources. Do you know why that is?

The more technologically advanced we become, the more proliferate we become. We have overcome the many aspects of life that historically prevented us from over-populating the earth. The over-growth of the human race, combined with its technological advances, has wrought great harm and damage to the very planet from which we draw our sustenance. The result is fewer resources to meet our needs. Some might say this is nature taking its course, but nature cannot recover from that which mankind has completely and utterly destroyed.  The devastation to the earth as a result of the poisonous by-products of our technological advancements, cannot nor will not recover sufficiently to sustain life on this planet. We are not only destroying ourselves, we are also destroying the majority of life on this planet – from macro to micro.

Not only are we destroying the very planet we need to sustain our physical nature, we are also destroying the very spiritual nature that has kept the human race from obliterating itself entirely. Yes, man has been killing man ever since Cain slew Able. Yet even with all our great knowledge and technological advances, we seem completely unable to tame the instinct to “kill or be killed”.

Of all the spiritual belief systems we humans have entertained throughout history, only one offers complete relief from the insane notion that — with or without justification — it is okay to take another person’s life. Even so, the majority of people have rejected it, simply because mankind prefers to think of itself as just one of many forms of animal life, rather than being the beloved creation of a benevolent, holy, and just creator. As long as we believe that life as we perceive it, was not and is not the result of a divine being to whom we are accountable, then we can comfortably continue to assuage ourselves with the insane notion that we are evolving into highly advanced, magnificent creatures of nature, rather than the senseless animals we have become, with absolutely no regard for any other life form, including our own.

Isn’t interesting and amazing that no other form of life on earth is as destructive or as senseless, as humans have proven themselves to be? We are not perishing from a lack of knowledge, but from a lack of wisdom.
