Living a Spirit-filled Life 101

The following are notes I took during a Men’s Retreat for the Rocky Mountain Region of the Free Methodist Church back in 2003. The weekend retreat began on a Friday evening and wrapped up on Sunday morning. The speaker was Larry Walkemeyer from Azuza Pacific University.

There are three parts to the notes. I hope you find the notes useful and helpful. Feel free to print and share the notes with others.

Friday Night -Spirit Filled Men

Speaking about our faith should not be polished. It should be a message (of Love) for everyone – including you. See Ephesians 5:15-20

Living Under the Influence

  • Are you filled with the Spirit?
  • Are you filled with the Spirit like being drunk on wine (i.e. under the influence of the Spirit)?

There are three steps to living a Spirit-filled life:

  1. An Honest Heart (honest about who and what you are)
  2. A Loose Grip (letting go of sin and control – and everything else! – so the Holy Spirit can influence your life)
  3. An Open Hand (open to God – to receive whatever he has for me).

Marks of the Spirit-Filled Man

1) Supernatural vs. the Natural

  • Are you living in the natural man or the supernatural spirit. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 (mere men)
  • 2 Corinthians 10:3 How are you waging war to win your battle? On your own power or on the Spirit’s power?
  • God has called us to be mighty men. Do you feel like an ordinary man? The Holy Spirit is for ordinary men (people). See James 5:17
  • Galatians 3:3 NLT (Human effort?)
  • Learn to rely on the Spirit to turn temptation down. Supernatural men who walk in the Spirit begin to walk in the gifts of the Spirit. (see Proverbs 16:32; 25:28)

2) Honesty vs. Denial

  • A Spirit-filled man is a man who is seeking truth in his life. Denial is consciously or unconsciously denying the truth.
  • Proverbs 28:13 (concealing or confessing sin) Spirit-filled men are pursuing truth in their inward parts. We can’t be honest and we hold on to denial because we’ve been deeply hurt.

3) Pilgrim’s Progress vs. Recliner Religion

  • Are you complacent or Spirit-filled? Are you risking? Stretching?
  • Philippians 3:12-16 (earnestly seeking – pressing on to the goal) Are you growing in the Spirit or “living in neutral”? When you are in neutral you are not sitting in the same place, you are going back down.
  • Matthew 5:6 (hunger and thirst for righteousness) When you hunger you will become filled, but not if you’re in neutral.

Disillusionment and discouragement lead to recliner religion.

  • John 14:26 – The Holy Spirit is the great encourager.
