Word of Faith

I would like to share with you an email I received from a dear sister in Christ and my reply.

I have a friend that is big time into the Word-Faith movement. He believes that we can have anything we want by just speaking it. He so takes scriptures out of context and I am having a really hard time witnessing to him. You know, it’s that old Say it, Do it, Receive it, Tell it formula, and if you don’t receive, then you must not have enough faith.

Got any advice for me? It’s no biggy, Karl; I’m praying for him and believing that God will give me the words and the right scriptures when I need them, just interested in your thoughts, that’s all.

Dear sister in Christ,

After initially reading your comment, I thought “What a wonderful topic for an article!” However, since doing a little more digging, I learned that there is much more to the Word-Faith (or Word of Faith) movement than I thought I knew. You see, I had always thought the word-faith movement was nothing more than the simple “name-it-and-claim-it” belief/teaching. After doing a little research, I see there is much more to it than just a single act of eisegesis. Therefore, I am simply going to make a brief statement and a suggestion;

  • Brief Statement: Our sole purpose in life is to worship and glorify God. We are to serve Him, not the other way around. He created us for His glory, not for ours.
  • Suggestion: Choose your favorite on-line search engine and conduct a search using “word-faith” or “word of faith” and you will find plenty of information.

Word of Faith (also known as Word-Faith or simply Faith) is a worldwide Christian movement; it teaches that Christians can access the power of faith or fear through speech. Its distinctive teachings are found on the radio, Internet, television, and in many Christian churches. The basic doctrine preached is that of wealth and health through positive confession.

I am not all that knowledgeable as to all the various cults and sects and teachings that claim to be “Christian” but in reality are deceived and deceiving others. What I do know is that every time I encounter one of them for the first time, the Holy Spirit makes it immediately clear to me that the teaching is of man [eisegesis] and not of God. God’s Word tells us that there will be many who will turn away from the truth to follow doctrines that teach what people want to hear (see 2 Timothy 4:1-5).

All things bring glory to God… even those things that seemingly go against God… for they prove that He is just and right and holy. God is omnipotent (all powerful) and we are His creation. We were made in His image, but we are not His clones. We are just a small part of a very bigpicture… one so grand that we can only perceive a small part of it, and our place in it. Trust in God and trust in His Son. Trust in His Word and be open to His Spirit of Holiness. He will make all things known to you at the proper time.

Consider also the words of Christ when He said,

“I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.” –Luke 12:8-10 (NIV)

May the Word of Christ dwell in you richly.
